Building falls in Punes Pimpri Chinchwad
A big chunk of a three-story building in Pune's Pimpri-Chinchwad fell on Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least 15 people trapped, according to officials. The structure held the administrative offices of a waste processing company. Officials reported that heavy rains caused a massive mound of rubbish close to the structure to slide, resulting in the collapse.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the fire department, police, ambulances, and other emergency response organizations have raced to the scene in Pimpri-Chinchwad's Moshi neighborhood. A rescue mission is underway.
Officials said the facility that collapsed on Wednesday was the administrative building for the Waste-to-Energy project, for which the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation signed a contract with Antony Lara Renewable Energy Limited.
According to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi, "This is the administrative block of the Waste-to-Energy Project of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation." He stated that the building is close to a mountain of 'legacy trash', which is untreated solid garbage and industrial byproducts that have been left in existing landfills or dumpsites for an extended length of time.
